Plant Street Market and Crooked Can Brewing in downtown Winter Garden, Florida, with the title Plant Street: The Market, the Trail & Living Nearby

Plant Street is the brick-lined main street of historic downtown Winter Garden, about 15 miles west of downtown Orlando. In a few blocks you have Plant Street Market and Crooked Can Brewing, a Saturday farmers market with more than 100 vendors, the restored 1935 Garden Theatre, and the West Orange Trail running right down the middle of the street.

I'm Nicole Mickle, a Central Florida relocation and new construction specialist. I first wrote about Plant Street Market in 2016, a few months after it opened. A lot has changed downtown since then, so this guide covers what is here now and what to know if you are thinking about living within walking distance of it.

What is Plant Street Market?

Plant Street Market is an indoor food hall and the home of Crooked Can Brewing Company at 426 W. Plant St. It opened in 2015, built by three friends, Andy Sheeter, Robert Scott, and Jared Czachorowski, who started out wanting to open a brewery in Winter Garden.

The building is new construction, but Czachorowski, who has an architecture background, designed it to fit the historic downtown around it.

Inside, Crooked Can's taproom anchors a rotating mix of local food and drink vendors. Recent vendors have included The Local Butcher, Sir Benji's Donuts, This Little Piggy barbecue, and Axum Coffee. Vendors change over time, so check what is open before you go.

Hours: Crooked Can is open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to midnight Friday, and 10 a.m. to midnight Saturday. Individual vendors set their own hours.

Crooked Can opened a second, much larger brewery and food hall in Minneola in July 2026, and several Plant Street vendors opened there too. The Winter Garden market is still open.

The Winter Garden Farmers Market

The Winter Garden Farmers Market runs every Saturday, year-round, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Downtown Pavilion, 104 S. Lakeview Ave., a short walk from Plant Street Market. It started in 2008 and now draws more than 100 vendors each week. Leashed pets are welcome.

If you live close enough to walk, this becomes your Saturday routine. If you are driving in, arrive early.

The Garden Theatre on Plant

The Garden Theatre opened in 1935 and is one of the anchors of downtown. It closed in October 2024 after its former operator ran into financial trouble. The City of Winter Garden, which owns the theatre, brought it back in 2026 with a new presenting partner, and the first season includes Footloose: The Musical, It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play, The 39 Steps, and 9 to 5: The Musical.

The West Orange Trail

The West Orange Trail runs down the median of Plant Street, with the Winter Garden Station at about mile 5. The main trail covers 22 miles from Killarney, at the Lake County line, to Apopka.

Events that bring crowds downtown

Spring Fever in the Garden, run by the Bloom & Grow Garden Society, fills Plant Street every April with garden vendors, live music, and a sidewalk chalk art contest. The festival marked its 24th year in 2026 and draws about 70,000 visitors. West Plant Street closes to traffic for the weekend and the city runs a free shuttle.

If you buy close to downtown, know the event calendar. Festival weekends are part of the fun, and they also affect parking and traffic on your street.

Parking downtown

Downtown Winter Garden has free public parking. The city opened another free lot at 695 W. Plant St. in April 2026, with 54 spaces plus spaces for oversized vehicles, open sunrise to sunset. On Saturday mornings and event weekends, plan to park a few blocks out and walk.

Living near Plant Street: walkable downtown or a short drive?

In Winter Garden, the biggest decision is usually how close to downtown you want to be.

In or near the historic downtown, you can walk or bike to the farmers market, the theatre, and dinner on Plant Street. Homes are older and varied, from early bungalows to newer infill, and there are not many of them. They rarely sit on the market long.

In newer communities a short drive out, you get new construction, community pools and amenities, and far more homes to choose from. Plant Street becomes a short drive instead of a walk. If that is the direction you are leaning, start with new construction in Winter Garden and my comparison of Winter Garden vs. Horizon West.

What to check before buying near downtown

Historic review. Downtown Winter Garden is a National Register historic district, listed in 1996, and the city's Historic Downtown Overlay District covers about 116 acres and 270 properties. The city's Architectural Review and Historic Preservation Board reviews new construction, demolitions, and renovations there. If you are planning a project, ask what needs approval before you buy.

Roof, plumbing, and electrical. On an older home, these are the systems insurers look at first. A four-point inspection will show you what they will see, and your inspector can flag older plumbing or wiring early.

HOA and CDD, if you go newer. Many newer communities near Winter Garden have both an HOA fee and a CDD assessment on the tax bill. Ask what each one costs and covers before you write an offer.

From the closing side, these are the details I have seen push closings back when they surfaced late. Checking them early keeps you in control.
