The Powder Room

A Powder room is a term that is not used very much anymore but it is making a comeback. This room is often the half bath that is located on the first floor under the stairway. There is often not a window and usually there is just a toilet and sink. The location of this room was for guests to utilize the facilities without having to enter the living space of the family.

The term Powder Room dates back to the 18th century. It was a term used for a room that was closet-sized and it was used for people to get their wigs repowdered. It carried over to the Victorian era where it was considered indelicate to refer to any bodily functions. At that time, women would excuse themselves to go and ‘powder their noses’. Many women still use the term when they refer to a public women’s restroom.

Homeowners are starting to recognize the appeal that this room has in a home as decorators have long understood that this small room can have a big impact when it comes to redecorating. Homeowners can use this room to express his or her style as well as introduce new colors, accessories and décor.

With 2015 right around the corner, why not update your own home décor. Try out some new paint colors, accessories or even fixtures. There are numerous ways that you try out something new without going for broke. On ThisOldHouse.com, there is an article from 2013 that has pictures of before and after remodels of powder rooms.
